The Big Question… Why?
Why Are We Doing This??
So the big question… why? Why leave everything behind and drag your kids halfway around the world to do this?
Simply put, we feel called. Ethiopia, like many other places around the world, has a great need for both the Gospel and practical help, and I think that we are in a position where we can offer both to the people of Ethiopia. When we read the Bible, we see Jesus calling His disciples to leave everything behind and follow Him. He didn't promise comfort or an easy life, but He promised that those who follow Him would experience the richness of His presence and the fulfillment of participating in His mission.
There's something profound that happens when we step out of our comfort zones and engage with people in different cultures and contexts. We learn to rely more deeply on God, grow in our faith, and experience the joy of seeing lives transformed by the power of the Gospel.
Moreover, the blessings of living in a privileged society like America come with the responsibility to bless others. By going to places like Ethiopia, we have the opportunity to partner with local communities, understand their needs, and work together to make a positive impact. We're not just leaving comforts behind; we're embracing a deeper sense of purpose, a life that's fully surrendered to God's will. It's not an easy decision, but it's one that's filled with immeasurable rewards in seeing lives transformed, bodies healed, and God's glory revealed in places where it's needed the most.
We have spent the last decade acquiring various skills and experiences in our professional lives that were ultimately preparing us to help make an impact in a country that was honestly not on our radar a year ago. But we have seen how God has simultaneously been working in the background to form the puzzle into which our piece fits perfectly. He has built a hospital in rural Ethiopia that needs the skills of a trauma surgeon that heals bodies but also mentors the future leaders and surgeons of tomorrow. The same hospital is seeing such tremendous growth that it needs somebody with an engineering background to help oversee the construction of multiple projects and somebody with an MBA to help with administrative duties.
We aren’t saying that we are the final answer to the needs of the hospital or the people of Ethiopia, but we know that God has called us at the perfect time to come and serve, and we cannot ignore that calling any longer.
